Although COVID-19 has brought a multitude of hardships into individual and collective experiences there has been an opportunity for growth. Many social justice movements have made their impact through social media information, protests, petitions, donations, and more. This time has given all of us the opportunity to grow as activists and allies.
Activism connects passionate people to impactful causes and movements in our local communities and around the world. The power behind activism is
immeasurable and has led to a multitude of advancements. The aim of activism is to be inclusive and inspiring to encourage people to fight for what they believe in.
It is important to remember that activism can be simple as well as impactful. Some of the easiest ways to participate in activism are taking time to gain knowledge and understanding on topics that are important to you and others. Social media is a great avenue to follow different activists and support and learn from them. Sharing through word of mouth or social media are simple and effective methods of spreading awareness and motivating others. It is important to remember that being an activist also means being an ally to people and movements you support.
Growth is at the centerpiece of activism and each individual must take time to grow and confront their own biases to accept everyone and fully support the movements they are passionate about. Activism beyond social media includes supporting marginalized communities by uplifting their voices and supporting their businesses or nonprofits, for example. Prompting change can also mean avoiding companies or businesses that do not support your views. Petitions and protests are powerful methods of activism, alongside, donating to organizations to support their goals and efforts. Creating lasting change through activism means incorporating these into daily life and continuously supporting different communities and organizations.
Growth also means taking care of yourself to be able to help others. Activism can be demanding and emotionally taxing, but it is critical to take a step back sometimes to evaluate your personal well-being and mental health. To achieve change and growth as an activist you have to be feeling strong and empowered.
